Thousands of years ago it was thought that lions lived as near to us as France, perhaps even in England! Now there are only a few places in the world where we can see them in the wild.
Asiatic Lion
The Asiatic lion many years ago used to roam in freely in Greece, Turkey, Yemen, the Caucasus, India Iran Bangladesh and many other areas. Now they are to be found only in Gir Forest national Park in Gujarat India. It was set up in 1965 to protect the lion from extinction and their numbers have grown from 177 animals to 360 in 2005.
Twenty people were sentenced to three years imprisonment for poaching six lions from the Forest in 2008.

The Mountain Lion
The Mountain lion lives in most parts of North and South America. It has many names including, the Cougar, Puma, Catamount, Mountain Cat and Panther.
It was almost extinct from the Eastern states of the USA but now it is making a comeback in Main and parts of Michigan. They are mostly found in the West however, and the state of Oregon has one of the largest populations – around 5000 animals.
